The Rongo Backpackers: Karamea
Tucked away at the end of the road of the South Island and surrounded by pristine bushwalks and beaches, this quirky backpackers accommodation is an attraction will be talked about for the rest of your life.
Karamea is quite literally the end of the road. At the top of the South Island, Karamea is an untouched paradise where a week long holiday feels like a month. It’s the type of town where life moves at a slower pace; a week long vacation will leave you as relaxed as a year-long break. The beaches are pristine, the bush walks stunning and The Rongo Backpackers is the best kept secret of New Zealand.
Where else can you find walls covered in unique artworks made by travellers accompanied by scribbled memoirs of their journey through the Heaphy track. The evenings are spent swapping stories, and drinks with local travellers talkative but weary from their travels next to a roaring bonfire. The music is usually acoustic because there is always a guitar at hand.
The Rongo also hosts the regions only radio show and they are only too happy to offer up the microphone to travellers and tourists with a story to tell. The audience is probably just the people listening from the bonfire anyway, but it makes you feel special.
