Carbon Neutrality!

Posted On 13 June 2009

Rongo Backpackers & Gallery is now officially carbon neutral!
A carbon audit was recently conducted on Rongo and sister business, Karamea Farm Baches, and a small carbon defecit was made up by investing in green energy. A certificate of carbon neutrality for the next year was awarded. Lessening the environmental impact of tourism is an important part of the Rongo philosophy and we work hard towards this goal, using methods such as:

Solar hot water heating
Organic gardens to provide locally grown organic food meals to guests
Complete composting system
4th Night Free policy, which minimises laundry, water use, electricity, detergent
Rainwater collection
Recyclable promotional material
Full recycling programme
Waste minimization programme
Room and water heating from locally grown wood
31 hectare nature reserve, which also acts as a carbon sink
Permaculture farm that produces organic, locally grown food for staff and guests
Fruit orchards, free-range chickens, sheep and cattle, vegetable gardens and woodlot
